MATCH REPORT | Woodford Town 3-1 Sawbridgeworth Town

Harrison Nathan22 Feb - 11:15

Shane Baptiste's side picked up three huge points.

The Woods returned to winning ways following Wednesday night's cup defeat, making it back-to-back victories in the Essex Senior League thanks to a comfortable win over struggling Sawbridgeworth Town.

After a dominant start, the hosts finally found the opener after 23 minutes through Peter Angelov. Simon Omope's early cross was inch-perfect and Angelov had time to control the ball, roll it through the keeper's legs and then finish into the empty net, as cool as you like! The lead should have been doubled just a matter of minutes later, with Josh Banfield's free kick meeting the run of Normand Kebi, who could not keep his header down.

There were further chances for Woodford to double their lead before the interval, with Nathan Sollosi forcing a good save from Parker in the visitors' goal before crashing a header off the crossbar.

Four minutes after the break, Omope thought he had added to his earlier assist as he fired home from close range, however, much to the amazement of the Woodford players, the goal was disallowed with the referee stopping play before the ball hit the back of the net, despite being in mid-flight.

Eventually, though, the second did come as the familiar combination of Josh Banfield and Miles Mitchell-Nelson combined from a corner, with The Woods' defender scoring his second in as many games as he headed back across goal and into the bottom corner. The hosts showed no sign of mercy either as they pressed for more, with David Gokou and Luke Steele both forcing great saves from Parker who kept the score at bay.

Despite his attempts, he was unable to prevent a third goal. Angelov, who had been the dangerman throughout the game beat his man and cut it back for Sollosi who finished with aplomb to round up Woodford's scoring for the night. Whilst it looked as though Manny Agboola would keep consecutive clean sheets, that dream was over in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, with a penalty sending him the wrong way to round off events for the night.

Woodford closed the gap on leaders Stanway Rovers to just one singular point ahead of their fixture at home to Barking on Saturday afternoon.
