The Woodford Town Sports Injuries Clinic is based at Ashton Playing Fields.  Its primary function is to facilitate all the players at the club from the youth squads up to the 1st Team.  Our aim is to provide:

  • Sports therapy support for all the players
  • Injury prevention and advice
  • Sports science and performance related support, including sports Nutrition
  • Match day cover, including emergency paramedical support

Our Therapy Support Team provide the players:

  • Injury assessment and analysis
  • Sports massage and soft tissue treatment
  • Taping and Strapping
  • Mobilisations
  • Cupping
  • Exercise Rehabilitation
  • Stretching and Flexibility work
  • Fitness Training and core stability training

 

Our dedicated team of therapists are working to support our players in every capacity.  We intend to provide a service equal to anything currently available in non-league football.

Our Clinic

When the players are not training or not receiving treatment, our doors are open to anyone in the local area looking for injury support and preventative interventions.  Our students gain vital experience working with our clients and get clinical hours that count towards their qualifications.  The proceeds go towards supporting the further training of any new students we recruit and also to purchase the equipment and replenish the medical supplies we use on a weekly basis for the various squads.  We offer the following:

Are you interested in a student placement?

Woodford Town FC is currently offering placement opportunities for students as part the undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

We currently have placement agreements to accept students from:

  • London Metropolitan University
  • University of East London
  • London Southbank University
  • University College London

 The Student sports medicine team is to support:
1) The men’s 1st Team
2) U23 squad
3) U21 development squad
4) U18 squad

You will be working alongside the current head of sports injuries and rehabilitation and his No. 2, a recent Sports Therapy graduate from London Metropolitan University; volunteering under supervision to support.

Match day pitch-side cover:
This will involve being at the ground before the players, and preparing them for matchdays by providing:
– pre match massage 
– stretching and warming up of players
– supporting pre-match fitness testing and assessments
– strapping and taping of players
– during the games coming onto the pitch, to provide 1st and trauma support to injured players when the referee has stopped play.
– providing 1st aid assistance and supporting the injury management plan for the 1st team.
– Ensuring players are hydrated throughout the match
– providing post-match support for the players, including warming down and stretching.
– supporting post-match injury assessment. 

CPD (continued Professional Development) of our students and therapists

We offer several courses and training programmes to develop and support our staff as they Through our main training partner Genesis Fitness, we can deliver several accredited courses.  Over the last 7 years Genesis Fitness has been a leading training provider delivering fitness industry qualifications throughout London.  We currently train and deliver:

  • 1st aid training
  • YMCA L3 diploma in sports massage therapy
  • YMCA L4 Certificate in sports massage therapy
  • YMCA L3 diploma in personal training

All these qualifications are offered stand alone or can be done to supplement the undergraduate courses that our students have undertaken.

Ricardo Johnson

Lead Sports Therapist

I have worked for over 24 years as a sports scientist/therapist, nutrition consultant, fitness coach, and Lecturer, Tutor/Assessor offering sports therapy/rehabilitation, Injury management and specific training around football, cycling and triathlons.  
I studied at university – both undergraduate (Sports Science at Southbank University) and postgraduate level (Exercise & Behavioural Medicine at Thames Valley University) as well completed vocational qualifications in Exercise referral, Sports Massage (levels 3 and 4) and Teacher training.
Currently he works with the bridge renewal trust (BRT) to deliver a weekly sports injuries clinic from the Laurels Healthy Living Centre – A complementary health centre that has two GP practices attached.
I have also supported an application from the BRT to deliver escape-pain; An accredited NHS Exercise and Rehabilitation programme for those with Arthritis. The BRT were successfully commissioned and both NHS and self-referrals.  Ricardo is the lead facilitator, delivering sessions in a number of venues throughout North London.
With the University of East London, and London Metropolitan University he offers placement opportunities for their Sports Therapy Degree students. With Genesis Fitness Training (A YMCA accredited training provider) based in Chingford, as the lead Tutor/Assessor he trains their level 3 and 4 sports massage students – offering them work placements.

Previously I worked as:
  • A Physiotherapy Assistant at the Royal Free Hospital.
  • A sports scientist and Lecturer with QPR FC Academy
  • An educational Tutor/Assessor with Fulham FC
  • A Sports Therapist with Leyton Orient Trust U18 development squad, providing match day pitch-side cover.
  • Part of the Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation team for the inaugural Tottenham Hotspur ladies squad – when they were launched in 2007/8
  • A health & well-being facilitator for a mental health bike project, offering cycling/bike riding for health and weight loss – in conjunction with the NHS.

Currently I am:

  • Supporting Woodford Town FC in the Essex Senior League, as the lead sports therapist overseeing their youth squads, 1st XI and reserves and dealing with all the sports injuries and rehabilitation and treatment for players.
  • I run my of clinic practice in Woodford where I employ and supervise sports therapists and also help train University students.
  • Working part time as a Further Education Lecturer teaching sports at City of Westminster College.
  • ARDP Hackney cycling club, during the summer cycling season, as a race day Soigneur, Sports Injury and Rehabilitation Lead.
  • I also write a sports injury blog for a football website.

Sufyan Mukhtar

1st team therapist

Sufyan Mukhtar graduated from London Metropolitan University in 2020 with a Sports Therapy degree.  He also holds a L3 Diploma in Sports and Exercise.

In addition he has an FA level 1 coaching badge along with various qualifications including a First Aid Qualification.

During his degree he has offered his services in a variety of sports settings. In the Cambridge marathon, London half- marathon at the London stadium and futsal.

He join Woodford Town FC as a placement student.  Since he has graduated he is the current 1st team therapist at Woodford Town F.C, providing pre-match and post match massage and taping,  pitch-side cover as well as rehabilitation to players on at clinic days, along with Injury Examination & Assessment. 

Suyfan is also a coach the Royal Falcons Youth Development Teams.

Shoko Otsuka

Club therapist

I am a bilingual physiotherapist from Japan with over 10 years experience and extensive knowledge in physiotherapy.  I am eager to apply my extensive knowledge in sports rehabilitation whilst applying for my HCPC uk registration. 

My experience includes working in a general hospital, nursing home and Woodford Harriers Athletics club.  With Woodford Town FC I help facilitate clinic, offer treatment and take part in joint assessments.

I have a wide range of experience in orthopaedics, neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology and respiratory medicine. Recently, whilst attending Middlesex University, I learned sports rehabilitation at post graduate level.  I successfully gained an MSc in Sports Rehabilitation.  I have clinical reasoning skills to assess players’/clients’ abilities, as well as practical knowledge of creating and implementing care plans.  I have a proven track record along with my communication skills and ability to multitask to provide effective care.

My areas of expertise are: Sports physiotherapy, Musculoskeletal physiotherapy, soft tissue techniques  (massage and mobilisation), Kinesio taping, and  Neurocognitive rehabilitation

Gabriella Griggs

Club Podiatrist

Gabriella Griggs is the latest addition to our sports medicine team.  She has come to the UK to work with Woodford Town FC and is excited to work with the Multi-discipline team of sports scientists, physiotherapists, sports therapists and soft tissue therapists.

Gabriela studied a Bachelor of Health Sciences (majoring in Movement) and a Bachelor of Podiatry with Honours at Central Queensland University. Gabby says the best part about treating patients is that no one walks out worse than when they came in. From Achilles Tendinopathy, footwear advice or general aches or pains, Gabby enjoys the challenges of health care, particularly meeting and assisting our diverse range of patients. Away from podiatry Gabby loves travelling, photography and supporting live music.
